Positive Parenting Five Week Courses
We run two five week Complementary courses:
The Positive Parenting Core Skills Module and
The Positive Parenting Applied Skills Module for people who have completed the Core Skills module (also useful for those who have done the old 10 week PSC's or 4 week Foundation course).
Together the courses will give you a full tool-box of skills and strategies and training in how best to use them, to help manage the day to day challenges of being a parent.
We offer morning and evening classes during school term time from a number of venues across SW London.
OR
you can gather a group of friends and book a course to be run in the comfort of your own home.
The courses last a total of 10 weeks, the experience and understanding lasts a lifetime.
Your children will benefit in many different ways, which will in turn makeyour life easier:
- They will learn how to listen and co-operate
- They will know that you understand and will listen to them at every stage of development
- They will become more independent and self assured
- They will adopt and practice values important to your family
- Their self esteem and confidence will grow
- They will establish a strong, happy and respectful realtionship with you and their siblings
- They will interact better and have more insight into relationship building with friends
- They will have more success in school
The benefits from laying a good foundation are too many to tell.
Prior to the programme, participants will receive a questionnaire to fill out about their children so that the facilitator has as much information as possible to make the course relevant to the individuals within the group.
" Parenting is not a natural ability all of us are born with. It is a learning process that takes time, patience and the development of skills."
Dr Charles Schaefer, Professor of Pyschology and author of Raising Baby Right.
Interested in joining but worried about committing to the classes before you have tried it?
You are invited to 'try before you buy' and come to a session of the course and decide after that if you'd like to join the programme.
Core Skills Programme Outline:
Week 1:
How to develop your child's motivation, co-operation, confidence and consideration using Descriptive Praise.
Week 2:
Reflective Listening: Improve your emotional bond with your children, encourage communication and good behaviour by understanding and helping them manage their emotions more effectively.
Week 3:
Setting up for Success: How to make home life more harmonious and reduce stressful moments.
Week 4:
Rules: How to make and consistently follow through on rules in ways that pass on the values you want to your children and encourage cooperation while preserving individuality.
Week 5:
Negative Behaviours: How to respond constructively to negative behaviours in ways that teach children to take responsibility and learn from their mistakes without damaging self esteem.
Applied Skills Programme draws on the skills learnt in module 1:
Week 1:
Fostering independence and encouraging good behaviour. Apply the skills to train your children in those attributes that you think they should have as adults. Training children to be more self reliant boosts their confidence hugely as well as giving them skills for life.
Week 2:
Being in Charge. Explore how to be in charge without being over controlling and how to discipline effectively in positive ways which encourage children to learn, not to fear.
Week 3:
Fostering good relationships between siblings and other children. Look at ways to foster positive relationships between children, siblings and friends, and ways of resolving conflict constructively.
Week 4:
Keeping Calm. How to structure your life so that when faced with provocative behaviour you can access your skills. Assess whether your expectations of your children are realistic by reference to stages of development and temperament.
Week 5:
What to do when your children push your buttons. When our buttons have been pushed our skills go out the window and we respond to our children's behaviour in ineffective ways. Learn how to recognise and defuse your buttons so you can react appropriately in the face of button-pushing behaviour.
