Talks for Parents at School
We have a series of Parent Practice seminars that we have delivered to a large number of different nursery, primary/prep and secondary schools. The groups that we speak to can vary in size, though typically, we talk to over 50 parents and teachers at each event. We make our talks entertaining, interactive and practical whilst creating a relaxed atmosphere where people can share their experiences (participants often find it amusing and reassuring to hear about the facilitators' shortcomings as parents!). Those who attend the talks tell us that they go away eager to tackle commonplace stresses experienced in day-to-day family life with the practical ideas and solutions they have learned.
For our full range of topics see the box to the left. Sessions are generally 90 minutes.
"I believe The Parent Practice engages parents in a world of value and principle-led parenting that can lead to emotional literacy and healthy relationships for Parents and their children. This is such a valuable thing in a world that has taught some in the past to be more concerned about results, which so often misses the essence of learning." Adrian Floyd, Headmaster Finton House School
We have presented talks in schools on a wide variety of topics including:
'Bringing Out the Best in Your Child' – This talk has been given on several occasions.
“We couldn't believe how quickly the evening sold out! Thank you so much, the feedback forms showed it was an overwhelming 'yes' for more talks. Consider the evening a great success” Marianne Rance, Fulham Prep PTA
'Preparing For the Teenage Years' - This talk addresses the concerns parents anticipate as their children become teenagers and explains why teens behave as they do. The parents who have attended this talk have found it insightful with plenty of practical solutions to help parents and teens enjoy these years together.
“Thank you for giving us some great strategies and for creating an environment where we freely shared our frustrations and concerns!” A Colet Court parent.
'Communicating with teens'- this talk provides the vital skills necessary to communicate really effectively with teenagers to avoid the probelms that so often arise during adolescence due to misunderstandings or just not communicating at all. Parents find when communication improves they can sort out problems and have a more positive relationship with their teens.
'Positive Discipline, Finding the Balance' - Another popular subject with parents. This talk looks at how to be firm while remaining positive.
"It gave me a chance to look at my parenting from a different perspective and see how I can be more positive. A Blackheath Prep parent
'How to Talk So Children Will Listen' and 'How to Listen So Children Will Talk' - Two of our most popular topics. These workshops show parents how to communicate more positively with their children, foster self confidence and encourage their children to share feelings and concerns.
"The Parent Practice have now delivered 2 seminars to our local cluster of schools. Each presentation has been received positively and with huge enthusiasm by our parents. Their clear principles, their empathy with the difficulties of parenting and the simple yet effective techniques they suggest have been whole-heartedly welcomed by our parenting community. The Parent Practice offers a very practical solution to the demands of parenting in todays world." Patricia Beechey, head teacher Oatlands Primary School, Weybridge
"Thank you very much for coming and giving your seminar to our parents. I certainly got a lot from it and I know my parents did too" Magoo Giles, head teacher, Kinightsbridge School
Mrs Barratt, the head teacher of Prospect House School wanted a talk that would give parents some of the positive strategies for motivation and discipline used in the school in order to strengthen the home/school united front. Judging by the great turn-out of parents, the talk she chose hit the spot!
"Thank you for an extremely successful and inspiring evening. It was a lot to cover and gave parents much food for thought.” Mrs Barratt, Headmistress Prospect house school
